All over Ireland while children were asleep

Billie Jane and Conor from their bedroom window peeped

They saw a little donkey eating all their grass

Conor said to Billie Jane “I’ll kick that donkey’s ass”

They ran into the garden to chase the donkey away

Go on, go back to the farmer and eat your bale of hay

The donkey swished his big brown tail

And looking down his snout, said “Good God where’s your

Manners kids, can you see I’m dining out”

Billie Looked at Conor and gave a little scream

“Is that donkey really talking, or are we both having a dream”

The donkey laughed a loud Hee Haw and said

“Billie you’re quite right I am a talking donkey

But I only speak at night”

“I talk when the moon is shining bright

And the stars come out to peep

I talk when all over Ireland the children are asleep”

Jean Burns
